Last night, the conference slate for all 16 2024 SEC members was revealed in a primetime special on the SEC Network. Many of the biggest announcements had already trickled out earlier over the course of the day, but there will still some surprises when the powers that be pushed back the curtain last night.
For Arkansas, we will start by noting who the Hogs will not be playing during next year's eight game conference schedule: the Hogs will dodge Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. The latter three (Kentucky and Vanderbilt especially) aren't a particular surprise given how rarely the Hogs square off against them in recent years. The former four are a different story. I was fully expecting the Razorbacks to be matched up with the Sooners and at least on of Bama/UF/UGA, so needless to say that its refreshing to see the Hogs won't have to face off against of these four schools that they have historically struggled against, to put it mildly.
Now we move on to the Hogs will play. The Razorbacks will host Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, and Tennessee on the Hill, while going on the road at Auburn, at Mississippi State, and at Mizzou. They will face off against Texas A&M in the Southwest Classic at JerryWorld for the last time, and they will do so as the designated road team. To start off, this is arguably the greatest home conference schedule that the Razorbacks have ever had. They will host three of their four rivals in Fayetteville, along with a historical power in a neighboring state that the Hog fans have no love lost for. Needless to say, that the athletic department will have minimal issues in selling out these games.
With regards to the road slate, it appears rather manageable on paper, but, as always, looks can be deceiving. The fact that only play three true road games is a major relief, particularly against programs with questions marks in Mississippi State, Auburn, and Missouri. Then again, each of these teams has had the Hogs' number for the past decade, so there is no reason for anyone in cardinal and white to become cocky. JerryWorld has been a house of horrors ever since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012, but perhaps Lady Luck will smile on the Razorbacks in Arlington for their final regular season game their for the foreseeable future.
All in all, this is about a good of slate that Arkansas could have hoped for both in terms of competitive balance and maintaining historic rivalries. What do you think? Feel free to share in the comments section below!
