Off and Running: Hogs Beat Down Samford

Arkansas cruises to 39 point, season opening win.

Samford was thought to be a good team before it came into Bud Walton Arena on Friday night.

Maybe it will still end up being a good team. It didn't do itself any favors though by turning the ball over 19 times and shooting 32 percent from the field for the game en route to a 95-56 beatdown.

It's got to be a good feeling for Mike Anderson to see the effort defensively from his group on opening night. Anytime you hold a team to 19 points in a half, you're doing something right, no matter the opponent.

Player(s) of the night

We'll go co-players. Daryl Macon and Jaylen Barford just seemed to pick up right where they left off from last year. Both managed 16 points each, shot a high percentage and got their teammates involved to the tune of 14 assists. They also got after it defensively. If they bring that kind of effort night in night out, this team can be dangerous.

Way to go, Adrio

Adrio Bailey was less than stellar in the two exhibitions, but he shrugged that off and performed admirably while starting on Friday with the absence of Dustin Thomas and Arlando Cook.

He was 7 of 8 from the field for 15 points, while also contributing six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. If he can bring energy, rebounding and knock down shots off the bench consistently from the 4, that only makes the Razorbacks harder to guard.

Attendance

8,054 for the opener is solid. Obviously you'd like to see more, but performances like this will only bolster the crowds the rest of the way, and with the football program in the shape its in, fans are going to want to see this group as it continues to gel.

Up next

Arkansas will host Bucknell on Sunday. The Bison dropped their season opener to Monmouth on Friday night. The Razorbacks will be off until next Friday after that, when they welcome Fresno State to town.
