All of a sudden Arkansas has two defensive line commitments, and they both came on Sunday. Juco defensive tackle Melvin Johnson made his commitment to the Razorbacks shortly after David Porter did so this afternoon.

Johnson chose the Hogs over offers from Kentucky, Iowa State, and Toledo. He’s originally from Las Vegas and signed with UNLV out of high school. He’s considered a 3-star prospect.
As has been much publicized, Arkansas is expected to shift more toward a 3-4 defense beginning next season, so quality defensive tackles are a premium. The California Community College Football Coaches Association named Johnson to their All-American team after his sophomore season (shouldn’t that be an all-state team? I digress.) Johnson will be a junior this season in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks will have a lot of young talent on the defensive line next year so it will be interesting to see how Johnson will fit into the rotation.
This is the 23rd commitment for Arkansas’ 2017 class.
