Peering Into the Future: Who Will Be Arkansas' Next Quarterback?

That's the question addressed by this Associated Press article. I think most of us believe Ryan Mallett will head to the NFL after this season. Assuming that's the case - and I see no reason to think it isn't - that leaves Tyler Wilson and Brandon Mitchell as the most likely candidates to be under center for the Razorbacks in 2011.

Here's a blurb from the not terribly revealing AP article:

Arkansas returned to the practice field this week in preparation for the Buckeyes, and spent part of that practice time taking a closer look at its younger players.

Mitchell stood out during spring practice, but it was Wilson who was thrown into action this season, when Mallett went down with a concussion during the first half at Auburn.

"This is a great time for them,'' Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said about bowl practices. "Tyler's been getting a whole bunch of reps. His confidence is as high as it's ever been. He really understands what we're doing.''

Based on his performances against Auburn and Ole Miss, I would have to think that Wilson is the clear front-runner (plus he has periodically displayed the floppy-haired, shaggy 'do that is a powerful indicator of SEC quarterback success) but a lot can happen between now and next September.
