Well, I'm convinced: I think we'll go undefeated and win the national championship.
OK - maybe that's getting a little ahead of ourselves.
Jimmy Dykes, who provided the color commentary on the pay-per-view broadcast, gave the team a B+ for tonight's effort, and I'm not inclined to disagree. The passing game looked great, as the team amassed 449 yards through the air, good enough to set a new single-game record for the program.
On the other hand, I thought the special teams, with the notable exception of Dennis Johnson's electrifying 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game, looked pretty wobbly. Ditto the first-team defense on some of Missouri State's first-half possessions. And at times, we still struggled to punch the ball into the end zone in short yardage situations.
All in all, about what I expected - and a hell of a lot more fun than last season's nail-biting season opener.
I think we'll struggle at times in the conference, but I also believe we're in for one very entertaining year. Go Hogs!
