Plus, what Arkansas means to SEC basketball, and the Tweet of the Week!

Arkansas' recent rise to success has caused a lot of people to question the strength of the SEC West, which is laughable. For the first time in the history of forever, an entire division is bowl bound SO HOW YOU LIKE THAT HATERZ? I've seen posts on various sites saying LSU and an Ole Miss team that was No. 8 in the nation was overrated when Arkansas beat them. How about this? Arkansas whipped both of them and made them look overrated, but the Hogs are just that good. The SEC West in the best compilation of teams in one division you will ever see.

I saw a tweet earlier this week, which Doc has put on the site, that Florida State would only be a 1.5-point favorite over the Razorbacks on a neutral field with a healthy Brandon Allen.

"Oh yeah, no doubt," Trey Flowers said. "I feel as though if you put us on the field with anybody -- the national champion or whoever -- I know we're going to be able to compete with them."

What a complete 180 it has been from the day Bielema was hired to now. People laughed at him when he walked into the toughest division in football and basically said he wanted to out-Alabama Alabama. Ain't nobody laughing now. It's just part of the process; it's just the beginning.

A new forced rivalry is upon us, but it doesn't mean we can't eventually get behind it. I'm all in on the basketball side of things, and Arkansas can ruin Missouri's season Friday, and that's enough to get me up for this one. So go ahead, get familiar with the enemy.

Hope everyone took time to enjoy Arkansas basketball's huge win last night amidst all the hype around the NEWLY BOWL ELIGIBLE FOOTBALL TEAM. Mike Anderson and the guys traveled to SMU to face Larry Brown in Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs fell out of the top 25 after losses to Gonzaga and Indiana (who just lost to Eastern Washington /golf clap), but still, Winning on the road against a decent team early in the season is a massive step for a squad recently placed in the top 25. Arkansas needs Arkansas to be good, and so does the SEC.

The Hogs are the kings of the forest!

Quarterback

Things were going quite peachy for the Hogs in the first quarter. Brandon Allen's touchdown pass to Keon Hatcher was a thing of beauty. BA finished with a respectable stat line which would've looked much prettier had he been able to play the whole 60 minutes.

Austin Allen stepped in and did an admirable job. I was worried for him and this trial by fire he was being dropped into, but he had poise and calmed everyone's nerves with the 33 yard pass to Keon that told Ole Miss their troubles were just beginning.

Overall Arkansas had a good, albeit small, passing game. Efficient is the name of the game for this Hog team. They kept the throws to the minimum, burned the clock and got off the field with a W.

Grade: B+

Running Backs

Huge congrats to Jonathan Williams on breaking 1,000 yards! It's going to be Alex Collins' turn next week to join the 1k club. Still, I'm disappointed to not see one of our backs go over 100 yards. Ole Miss is no slouch, but our run game is the real deal. Good strong running for J-Will, though. No complaints.

Collins may be starting to feel the effects of an intense SEC schedule. He only averaged 3.4 per carry which is unlike him. He did finish with 79 on the ground though, so I won't make a mountain out of a mole hill, but hopefully we'll see him finish strong.

Grade: B+

Receivers

Not much to say when 4 players combine for 8 touches. Got to see Morgan and Hatcher play some good ball after Ole Miss keyed on our dynamic tight ends. Hatcher had a spectacular catch in the end zone. He has a knack for catching those difficult balls.

Drew Morgan was consistent, and we needed him to be. He fought for 51 yards on 3 catches, leading this band of Hog pass-catchers. I must say that despite the lack of stats, Morgan and Hatcher really made their presence felt in the run game. Both sealed excellent blocks and paved the way for some really impressive runs.

Grade: B

Offensive Line

This was one of the most complete games from this unit. We all know this group is special, and considering they're returning the majority of their starters next year I am so pumped to see this team keep fielding elite linemen. The recruiting class is beginning to shape up so there is no telling just how crazy talented this group could be in a couple years.

Like I said, this group played a great game and kept our offense churning against the number 8 team in the nation.

Grade: A

Defensive Line

Trey Flowers and Darius Philon tried their hardest to garner matching stats as the line went to work on Ole Miss. Both players recorded a sack, 1.5 and 1 TFL respectively, recovered a fumble, and recorded a QBH. Philon just barely gets the edge for forcing a fumble as well. When half of your defensive line have stats like that, the game gets a lot easier on the 7 folks behind them. The line was the catalyst for an amazing defensive performance. Consistent pressure and constant playmaking have become the norm for this unit

Grade: A+

Linebackers

If our team is known for one thing it's having "dynamic duos". J-will/Collins, Henry/Derby, Flowers/Philon, and now Spaight/Ellis. The two combined for 17 tackles on their way to insane performances. Spaight led by example with an early "Spaighting" of Bo Wallace, forcing a fumble and setting the tone early. He also tacked on a pass breakup as well as a QBH en route to another banner game!

Ellis made a few plays too. A TFL a pass break up, and an INT that he returned for 36 yards and sealing the shutout! Good to see Brooks back to form after his midseason injury. Both he and Spaight are red hot heading into the end of the year. I can't wait to see what they do to Maty Mauk and the 8-2 Tigers.

As a unit, the Hog linebackers were solid all around. If I'm a recruit, I'm taking a good look at Martrell Spaight and this Robb Smith defense. What this group has turned into over the course of 11 games is mesmerizing.

Grade: A+

Secondary

The domination continued on all defensive fronts. Rohan Gaines made his presence felt immediately upon being put in the game at the start of the second half. He started things off with a devastating hit and it wasn't long after that he took Bo Wallace's pass the other direction for a 100-yard pick six that was the highlight of the game (and maybe the year).

Henre Toliver, D.J. Dean, and Jared Collins all played solid games against what is usually a solid passing attack. Collins even had 3 pass breakups, including one in which he made an excellent play to slap the ball out of the defender's hands on 3rd and long.

Of course Rohan wasn't the only DB with an INT. Tevin Mitchel enjoyed the senior spotlight. Throwing off his back foot, Bo hung up a pass a little too much. Mitchel pounced on the opportunity making a tremendous effort to keep a foot inbounds. Killing that red zone drive was clearly devastating for Bo, who could never quite make a play all day.

Grade: A

Special Teams

McFain had a solid performance, accounting for three field goals. 31 yards may be his perfect range as he drilled all 3 within it. The 37 yarder as time expired in the first half was not so good. Looking back it wasn't needed, but it would've been tremendous to hang those 3 on the board heading into halftime after losing BA. Momentum didn't shift Ole Miss' way entirely, but Hugh looked a little too pleased for my liking.

The punter from Down Under, Sam Irwin-Hill had a strong game as well. 6 punts for a 40 yard average set the Hog defense up nicely. Better yet, he was able to sink half of his punts within the 20.

Coverage was on par with what we've come to expect from this group. We even got a generous assist from an Ole Miss player who fielded a kickoff and preceded to run OB at the 1 yard line.

Let's hope this unit can put 2 more of these solid performances together.

Grade: B+

Final Thought

Bowl eligible and with a game to spare! I'm setting money aside for tickets as we speak. I know the Hog faithful will come out in droves for whichever bowl we get. I know we are all super elated at this point. The outlook at the beginning of the season did not include a bowl berth by most people. Let's keep that in mind when it comes to criticizing this group. Imagine if you explained this season to yourself in mid-August. You would've carted your future self off to the booby-hatch! I'm incredibly proud of our boys, but I'm going to hold all my wonderful thoughts till late December, because we still have work to do!

Coach B provides injury updates on Brandon Allen and begins looking ahead to Missouri.

This week's MVPs: Collins and J-Will (offense), Spaight, Flowers, Turner and Mitchel (defense), Sam Irwin-Hill (special teams)
— Robbie Neiswanger (@NWARobbie) November 24, 2014

I was afraid Bielema would give an answer like this about Allen. It seems like he's rarely definitive about how long a player will be out unless it's clear to everyone a player will be out for an extended period of time. My gut says it's an outside chance Allen plays on Friday. Perhaps if the team was still fighting for bowl eligibility it might be more likely, but since that's already taken care of, I'm not going this week expecting to see him.

BB: In the worst case, Rafe Peavey and AJ Derby can and will serve as back up quarterbacks for Austin Allen.
— Razorback Nation (@RazNation) November 24, 2014

I don't even know what this means.

Austin made a couple of big time passes in the Ole Miss game. The two field goal drives he led were huge. The question is, if he starts on Friday, how many points will the offense even need to score and will they also rely more on direct snaps to Williams/Collins?

I bet the Bret Bielema Thanksgiving feast is top notch.

BB: Chaney shared with the players that if they didn't turn the ball over on Saturday that they had a 90% chance to win.
Also, if the defense shuts out the opponent, there is a 99% chance they will win. (I would have said 100%, but that Wake Forest/Virginia Tech game went to OT with a 0-0 score, so you know.)

If the streak-buster against LSU was a TKO, then the beatdown of top 10 Ole Miss on Saturday in front of hearty and happy Hog fans was a knockout.

Thresholds can be fascinating things, really.

The thresholds represented by marriage and parenthood, for example. Points at which our lives are permanently altered by significant events. And we usually associate them with positive changes. (As for those two examples, let’s hope so anyway.)

The Arkansas Razorback football program, if not the entire Hog brand itself, has crossed a significant threshold. If any doubt lingered, it was put to rest on Saturday.

If nothing else, Razorback fans learned beginning in April 2012 that nothing is guaranteed. The lesson was a long slough of humility, exasperation…disbelief.

Going forward, it’s doubtful many Razorback fans will feel entitled, as perhaps some of us began to feel in the aftermath of the impressive 2012 Cotton Bowl win that resulted in a No. 5 final ranking and a top 10 start to the 2012 season.

We marveled at CBP’s house of cards, pretty as J-Wright on a post but vulnerable to storms, as represented by the big boys of the SEC West, and Warhawk ambushes.

And we’ve watched as Coach B and his fellow coach/masons built the foundation, brick by jumbo package brick, and lifted the program into position to cross that threshold. Moving forward, Razorback football appears suited to weather those storms and even brew some of its own.

A few observations:

Atwater, Hamlin, Kennedy, Bua…Rohan Gaines.

Speaking of, the pick 6. My first thought, thinking the pick was made further back in the end zone, was "Just down it." 26, however, was ready to ride his "sea of red." That one will go down in Hog lore. Seriously, an all-time great highlight. From potentially 20-7 and sweating it out to 27-0 and ball game. It’s amazing – astounding really – how drastically the play of our defensive backs has improved.

That image of a white Hog against a cardinal background as represented on our helmets…it still makes my heart race. Nothing more beautiful.

Saw us break the streak with my oldest son at my side. Went to Ole Miss at my dad's side. Both games included moments of jumping up and down in ecstasy and other expressions of joy, blissfully shared with each. For that, I’m truly thankful.

I'll confess that I wondered if 17-0 at half was gonna be a big enough cushion. Silly me. And even though garbage time enabled Ole Miss to just surpass us in total yardage, like LSU, the outcome was no fluke. And we mostly did it with our backup QB.

Surely, it's obvious by now that "normal American football" can defeat HUNH, can hold up better for the long haul, and that it can be done at Arkansas.

Wasn't a full house (weather...again), but the recording of the game on Sunday confirmed what I knew to be the case on game day: The crowd, the waterlogged diehards who were there, was loud.

Trey Flowers: Well done, young man. The game, the season, the career. And senior class.....Take a bow. Any future success will reflect back on your sacrifice, perseverance and faith.

So, things change now. Coaches who spent the better part of two years applying duct tape to the team's psyche, massaging and reinforcing, must manage expectations suddenly awash in praise as steady as Saturday's rain.

Funny how quickly things can change. But really, this change has been coming, gradual and eventual. We're bowl eligible, and for the rest of 2014 anyway, it's all gravy. Missouri, the bowl. Gravy.

Of course, there remains a bigger picture to help bring into focus. Two more wins to close out 2014 would set up a season as highly anticipated, perhaps, as any we've ever had save maybe a select few.

But for now, that gravy --- absolutely earned -- tastes pretty good, doesn't it?
