I thought long and hard how I should grade this massacre of a football game.

Obviously I had to view this for what it was; an SEC team playing a program that is funded by going into dangerous places and allowing their players to be destroyed by much better competition.

Ultimately, I decided to grade this game by only examining the first half and treating Nicholls like they can compete with FBS teams from the Sun Belt or something. I also made sure to consider that this score is what we should be able to put on a team like this.

Quarterbacks

While Brandon Allen only attempted 5 passes - 4 of which were touchdown completions - I came away not too impressed. Obviously we didn't have him attempting anything difficult, but his incompletion with no pass rush on 3rd and 17 left me a little befuddled. On top of that, the wide open pass to Keon Hatcher for a 50 yard TD was uninspired. Keon had to come almost to a complete stop to catch the underthrown ball, and perform a juke to get to the endzone. I know the old argument that the only way that ball isn't a catch is if he's overthrown, but it makes me question his arm strength a little.

Grade: B

Running Backs

I can only describe this with a memory I have of being a freshman in high school on a street of 8 year old boys. They always wanted to play football with me after school, and even though I was not an athletic specimen at that age, I felt like Tony Dorsett playing against a team of Mogwai from the film Gremlins.

40 carries for 495 yards and 6 scores for an average of 12.4. Folks, that's only 44 less yards than Air Force put on them last week and we don't run a triple option. Basically it boils down to one more carry for Jonathan Williams (4 carries for 143 yards with a 35.8 ypa) away from hanging the same amount of rushing yards on them. WOW. Loved what I saw from every back. Thumbs up to Patrick Arinze who put on a blocking clinic. He looked great.

Grade: A

Receivers

Not a lot to work with here. There were only eight completions for the entire game. Our receivers looked dominant against Nicholls like they should have, however I was most impressed with their blocking. Hand over fist, way better than last week. Of course it WAS Nicholls. I'm still waiting to see somebody emerge as the it guy. If I was K.J. Hill I'd be excited to get to campus. Overall, solid performances, but I wanted to be wowed.

Grade: B+

Offensive Line

Penalties! I know we had some young'ins starting, but there were still more penalties than I'd have liked. It's basically the only stat in which Nicholls was better than Arkansas. Really wasn't impressed by that. Building on last week, they looked great during play again. Ragnow played well I thought, as did Dan Skipper. Again, not a big test versus Nicholls so I won't prattle on. No sacks, or really any quarterback pressure, and the running backs ran wild, so that's about all you can ask for from the line.

Grade: B+

Defensive Line

I was feeling clairvoyant last week I guess. Taiwan Johnson played so big on Saturday (3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss) he's now the SEC leader for sacks. At only 255 pounds I still can't believe he's playing on the inside, but man his athleticism is on point. He was on the QB's scent all game and nearly added a forced fumble to his stat line. I don't want to go too quick without mentioning that Trey Flowers was inches away from a couple sacks that Johnson picked up. So while Johnson got the stats, Flowers should be given credit. Again, more great things from Darius Philon. This crew is looking solid as ever. I

Grade: A

Linebackers

I'm loving the play I see from Brooks Ellis. I'm going to be writing his name a lot this year. My one criticism goes for everyone on defense. LESS TRYING TO LAY THE WOOD, MORE WRAPPING UP! I'm so tired of them not wrapping up. It's fine against Nicholls but our SEC foes aren't going to fall down and quit. If we want a defense that's going to win games they need to tackle better. Kudos to Khalia Hackett for the forced fumble even though Arkansas couldn't get it.

Grade: B+

Secondary

This unit probably gets the worst grade of the game. They did force the only turnover, but I'm worried we are reluctant to play even awful teams in man coverage. I saw too much zone. We did have stellar 4-man pressure, but mix it up and test these guys! It's got me scared to see what we may be incapable of later on. I'm overreacting I know, but I'm tired of having the worst secondary in the SEC. Maybe I'm being too critical as well, but giving up 208 passing yards is inexcusable for this kind of competition. After all, Air Force only gave up 200. Side note, I thought Gaines looked fast and covered the field well.

Grade: C+

Turnovers

One turnover? Really? One Turnover is not ok. We almost got that forced fumble via Taiwan Johnson, but honestly this had the making of a 3-turnover game. Shutting down the running game completely, and having a devastating pass rush should have made passes ripe for the picking. DJ Dean looked great all game doing a bit of everything. I liked what he brought to the punt return game and he notched the only turnover. The Razorbacks did force two fumbles but couldn't get either of them. A 0 +/- won't earn the Hogs a "B" this time around.

Grade: C-

Final Thought

We put on the performance we were expected to. That makes me optimistic. This was the kind of FCS thrashing that I saw from Wisconsin 3 or 4 years ago and I liked that. Most importantly this was a win as far as the NCAA is concerned and means this drought is over! Yes it was Nicholls, but the Hogs need to build on this and look towards TTU. We should be happier than "pigs in $&%#" at this point because Tech is looking vulnerable. While I think Texas Tech will "play up to the competition" so to speak, I don't think it's unreasonable for all of Hogdom to expect a win next week. That will be a win to be proud of.

Final Grade: FCS W!

Thoughts from section 112 in Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The Good:

Just about everything concerning the actual play on the field was good. The weather ended up being fantastic, temperature-wise. I will never forget how hot the ULL game was last season, and this year's home opener was about the best weather we could ask for. I thought the crowd of 64,000 was a good number considering the opponent.

Obviously, the offense as a whole was good. I'd like to give a special shout out to Keon Hatcher for not dropping the toss on the first play from scrimmage. Great job by Jim Chaney to call a play that could get Hatcher some confidence in his hands again.

I think I actually saw a coverage sack. I can't be 100% sure because it has been so long since I've seen one in person. But, if I really saw what I thought I saw, that's pretty awesome to see again.

The Bad:

The new sound system they installed into the stadium. There was constant feedback and they couldn't figure out what the volume should be. When they played the censored version of "Move" by Ludacris, the song uses the sound of a woman screaming to censor the "B" word. That is an awfully annoying sound when you're blasting it at level 10 throughout the stadium.

Also, the SEC has now allowed teams to play music in between snaps. It is suppose to go off when the offense walks to the line of scrimmage, but that rarely happened Saturday. It caused at least one false start on Nicholls. Some people may think that's awesome, but I think it's in poor taste. I wouldn't want a team doing that to Arkansas on the road. I heard this was a problem in several other SEC games over the past few weeks. They may change the rule mid season if this keeps up.

The over-hype of the new team intro also makes it onto the bad list. The intro itself isn't bad, but it was more over-hyped than the last 10 NBA Dunk Contests combined. Yeah, its cool, but everyone has already done everything you can possibly do. So stop acting like you are doing something revolutionary.

The Ugly:

The final score makes my "ugly" list. Was this type of game EXACTLY what the Razorbacks needed? Probably. But, it wasn't too long ago when the Hogs were losing 52-0 Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier. They were gracious enough to not hang 70 on Arkansas. I even remember how embarrassed I was when USC hung 70 on the Hogs. Is it their job to stop you? Yes, but just because you paid the little kid down the street $100 bucks to punch him in the face, doesn't always make it right. I felt like I needed to take a shower after the game, but that is par for the course when a slump buster is involved.

Also, Bielema challenging the spot on a first down up 63-0. I disagreed with this because our defense needed the reps. Regardless of the spot of the ball, at this point in the game, the offense didn't need anymore reps. They had proven their point.

Alex Collins had some fun on Saturday afternoon. | Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

That was a pleasant surprise. The Hogs looked like the kind of team we aspire to become and ought to look like against an outmanned opponent.

A confession. We didn't make it to the game. Let's just go with unforeseen circumstances involving oldest sons and longer-than-expected cross country meets.

We didn't make it, and of course missed out on the biggest offensive output since the '03 Kentucky game which required seven OTs to put up 71.

In case you missed it too, here's a short recap. (Literally, this pretty much sums it up.)

Saturday must've been a treat for those who did make it, though. And a hat tip to those few thousand who stayed 'til the end. Why anyone would want to leave while we're having so much fun is beyond me (but then again, I always stay, or this case watch, 'til the clock reads 00:00 regardless).

Why leave on such a significant day in the annals of Hogdom: The program's longest losing streak was broken and done so in a manner that suggests similar streaks won't be forthcoming. It was a glorified jamboree, sure, but we needed it: The program, the fan base, the state. And it felt good.

Funny, but I'm against scheduling 1-AA teams. Place me firmly in the Saban camp of those who believe "Power 5" schools should only schedule each other (I'd even love to see "D-4" become a reality).

But I'll take this one with a hearty "thank you, sir, may I have another."

While we've been wallowing in sub-mediocrity the past two years, playing one of the toughest schedules in the country in CFB's toughest division, most other teams got to munch on multiple cupcakes (conference and non-con alike), scratch out six wins and maintain their brand.

It's reasonable to assume that we all expected the streak to be broken on Saturday, but 73 in such dominating fashion? I think that was a pleasant surprise. The Hogs looked like the kind of team we aspire to become ought to look like against an outmanned opponent.

Observations, from the "new entrance" to Duwop.

Paper said the crowd was 63-something. Looked bigger from what I could tell on TV, and no shots (unless I missed 'em) of the new student party deck, or whatever it is. It was the home opener, and 63 certainly is disappointing. But this is a 3-9 team coming off 10 straight losses playing a 1-AA team. (And what's with the whole "reference as just Nicholls" thing? Memphis State became Memphis because it actually CHANGED THE NAME of the school. I've got beefs with UNC-Charlotte and ULL as well.)

The new entrance. Pumba definitely looked better on the front of the gate after being properly painted. And it's certainly an upgrade from the inflatable snout (I get the feeling Coach B hated that). But overall, my reaction was "eh" given that it was billed as something that would be the envy of CFB. I'll withhold true judgment 'til I see it in person in two weeks. As long as they don't mess with running' through the A...

That call on our first offensive play from scrimmage? Nice.

I love that Robb Smith rolls the dice, occasionally sending 'backers, and appears to be much more aggressive than last year's staff. But our middle is at times so open even Nicholls (State) exposed our underbelly a few times. That said, overall a good day. The DL push was something to behold.

Taiwan Johnson....dang.

Oh, and defense....WRAP UP.

All the freshman that played...Man, that was awesome (in a big picture, longview kind of sense). We've got some good ones. I'm looking at you, Bijon, Anthony Brown, Damon Mitchell, Ragnow, Toliver, Liddell, just to name a few.

Speaking of Duwop, why doesn't he get more touches? That young man needs to have the ball in his hands, wherever it is. Granted, he was mopping up against 1-AA defenders, but he made NSU defenders look almost as outclassed as Alex and Williams did.

Alex -- how great is it that we have him? Seeing him on the bench late, smiling and singing the Fight Song... That may have been the highlight of the day for me.

Wonder how many carries it would've taken Marshall to score had he played? O/U is 2.

Walker and Evans ran OK, but there's a big drop off between our top 3 backs and the rest. Which I suppose is expected. Duwop could make that a 4-headed monster....

BA deserved a game like that. Well done.

Austin looked OK. But is it in the Allen DNA to throw pick 6's? (That was a nice play by the NSU backer.) Credit AA for his effort in making sure his late pick didn't turn into one, and great job by the D to then force a TO itself. I was begging Chaney to just punch it in and score at that point. I confess I wanted 70. But we were trying to get various freshmen including AA their first score. I get it.

Speaking of, nice play by AA to get his first score.

I suppose it's really nitpicking to let loose a small sigh about the yards given up late. Wasn't that many, but I would've liked to have seen the reserves make it harder on 'em. Bobby Hebert's kid looked pretty good. Granted, he didn't have to play against Flowers & Co. Watching him, I wondered where Bobby was watching the game (stands or press box) and if he let loose a "colorful" tirade whenever his son got sacked.

How awesome was it seeing BYU rout UT in Austin? Extremely awesome.

Watching some of Texas Tech-UTEP (and seeing this morning that they pulled it out late), I think we'll be able to move the ball on 'em. But their short passing game could expose us on D. Still, definitely a winnable game, I think, and one that could determine a lot about this season. It'll be a trip playing in Lubbock again after so long.

The unis....I've come around on the new ones although I always believed they represented a vast improvement over the last two years. Still don't like the "tusks" on the sleeves all that much, but the cardinal and white on a more simple scheme with no black trim POPS. Love it. And as much as the Stormtrooper looked popped last week, I think we should always go with cardinal helmets. That should be one component of the unis that never change.

1-1

If you want to look at this game as the exorcising of a year's worth of demons, you can do that.

If you want to look at this game as Arkansas simply taking advantage of a completely overwhelmed opponent, you can claim that as well.

It was too easy for the Hogs Saturday afternoon. And when I say too easy, I mean no, really, way too easy. Brandon Allen only completed four passes but they were all for touchdowns. Three of Arkansas' first five offensive snaps were for touchdowns. The Razorbacks scored 35 points in the first quarter and 56 in the first half. Nicholls didn't get beyond the 50-yard line in the first half.

73 points is tied for the third most in Razorback history with the 1928 Texas Southwestern game.

It was a great day for stat padding in the running game. Alex Collins rushed 13 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns (he only had four all year last year). Jonathan Williams only ran four times but gained 143 yards including a 90-yard touchdown run. Unfortunately, Korliss Marshall didn't play and Lord knows what he could've done running away from the Colonels. Bielema said after the game that Marshall would be 100% ready to go against Texas Tech.

On the first drive after halftime, Brandon Allen completed a shovel pass to Jared Cornelius that he took 38 yards for a touchdown. It's a play I don't remember seeing before in the Bielema era.

Defensively, Martrell Spaight led the Hogs with 6 tackles (a linebacker leading in tackles! WOOT!). JaMichael Winston and Khalia Hackett followed with 5 each. Taiwan Johnson had 2.5 sacks and Darius Philon had 1.5. DJ Dean also earned an interception (and nearly took a punt return all the way for a touchdown as well). Trey Flowers didn't register a sack or a quarterback hurry, but it sure seemed like he was in that backfield an awful lot (at least as long as the starters were in the game.)

Nicholls' only touchdown came on a drive that was interrupted by Bielema challenging a spot while leading 63-0. That happened.

But ultimately, what does this mean going forward? It all depends on how the team reacts to an easy win breaking the long losing streak. Does it give them any accurate sense of confidence going into a much more difficult game next week? Does it, at the very least, erase any losing mentality that might have developed during the last 10 games? We'll see. I'm sure we'll get told all the right things.

As bad as Nicholls is (and they are horrendous. The Nicholls beat writer next to me told me they were picked 9th in their conference out of 11 teams - and the two teams picked behind them have been playing football for a combined 6 seasons total in their histories) Arkansas should gain some confidence from this. The Razorback had a far easier time with the Colonels than Air Force did last week. Nicholls didn't even have much success throwing against Arkansas, with starter Kale Henderson completing just 12 of 30 passes.

However, the team shouldn't be too confident because Nicholls is really bad. The Razorbacks still need to prove something and they'll have a real shot in Lubbock next week in what is a huge game for Arkansas.

But ultimately, it's hard to find too much to complain about with today's performance. Arkansas needed to dominate. They did. The game was never in question. This wasn't anything like last year's Samford game. No one appeared to get hurt. Lots of players saw the field that didn't play against Auburn. It's time to find out what this team can do and hopefully we'll start to find out next week.

END. THE. STREAK.

There's absolutely no reason that this one shouldn't be a walk-over folks, but if nothing else head on out to Donald W.
What The Colonels don't have going for them; any sort of rushing defense. Air Force dominated Nicholls <s>State</s> for 474 rushing yards and 8 rushing TDs last week.

Wikipedia lists 23 "Notable Alumni" of Nicholls <s>State</s>. I recognized 1 of them. However, that one was Chuck Taylor, yes, of the famous Converse shoes you wore growing up, so they've got that going for them.

Taking a look at the new, young players we could see on the field this weekend.

The 2014 Arkansas Razorbacks are a youthful squad; everyone knows that. The majority of the team’s top contributors are not seniors. There are a lot of underclassmen on the field. These Hogs have talent, but a lack of experience and a struggle to find depth led to Arkansas’ defeat at Auburn last Saturday.

Many expect the Hogs to have double digit true freshman contributors this season. Frank Ragnow, Bijhon Jackson, Randy Ramsey, and Henre' Toliver all played significant snaps in the opening game. Since this team is so young and is in search of depth, a key to the Hogs making a bowl game could be to continue to develop their underclassmen.

This Saturday, Arkansas takes on the Nicholls Colonels at Donald W. The Colonels are an FCS program on a similar losing streak as the Hogs and are coming off a sizable loss to Air Force. This weekend should be a perfect opportunity to rep the young guys.

Offensively, look for freshman wide receivers <strike>JoJo Robinson and</strike> Kendrick Edwards to see a lot more reps. Robinson, a slot receiver from Miami, has shown flashes in practice. His Joe Adams-esque ability allowed him to take a short crossing route to the house in the Hogs final fall scrimmage. Consistency has been the obstacle for JoJo. (Editor's note: after this was written it was reported that Robinson would be held out of the game due to an injury suffered in practice when someone stepped on him.) Kendrick Edwards is a huge target at 6’6 and could certainly help Arkansas in the Red Zone.

On the offensive line, Frank Ragnow and Brian Wallace are expected to contribute. The coaches had indicated they would play against Auburn, but the coaches decided against it late. However, with all the talk this week about how many plays players should be able to play during a game, it's likely they'll play this week.

Freshman defensive tackle Bijhon Jackson, is a load in the middle of the line, but the coaches said he should only play 10-30 snaps a game. Hopefully, he can see more plays this Saturday and continue to develop stamina. Arkansas’ starting defensive line is extremely talented, but depth needs to be developed.

The linebacking corps has the most young talent of any position. Randy Ramsey, Dwayne Eugene, and Khalia Hackett will all help Robb Smith’s defense this season. Ramsey played the most significant snaps last Saturday, but if he, Eugene, Hackett, and JUCO transfer Josh Williams can gain confidence and knowledge of the system, it could be huge for the Hogs as the season goes on.

In the secondary, Henre' Toliver will be the main freshman contributor. Toliver played as the number three corner last week and did a serviceable job. Arkansas’ glaring weakness in the secondary was at the safety position, though. Auburn had receivers running wild all day down the middle of the field. Backup safeties Josh Liddell and Deandre Coley will get meaningful reps this weekend and eventually be able to contribute consistently.

The Razorbacks need a win in the worst way to snap their 10-game losing streak. I don’t see that being an issue this weekend, but hopefully the Hogs play a clean game and execute on both sides of the ball. If Arkansas can get its underclassmen plenty of beneficial reps while still handily winning the game, this weekend will be a significant victory.
