Two scrimmages are down and we’ve got some more insight into how the upcoming season will go. It also has given us a chance to see how different things are with the new coaching staff. Now that there are just a few practices left, we’ve got some answers to some of the Spring’s biggest questions.
Who’s Changed Positions?
A while ago Kamren Curl made the move from cornerback to safety so both he and Ryan Pulley can get in the starting group. Chad Morris has said Curl looks “at home there” and helps make the secondary one of Arkansas’ deepest positions. McTelvin Agim has also moved around a bit. After taking a few days at defensive end, he’s now moved to the interior part of the defensive line.
Do We Have a New Starting QB?
Not officially. Chad Morris has said there won’t be a starter named this spring. The competition right now is between Chad Kelley and Ty Storey. In the most recent scrimmage Kelley outperformed Storey. Kelley went 9/14 for 129 yards passing while hitting Grayson Gunter and LaMichael Pettway for touchdowns, the latter happening while he was on the run. Storey was a much more pedestrian 8/21 with a TD and a very ugly interception. Given Kelley’s experience and play so far, it would seem he has the leg up in the competition right now.
Who Could Be A New Starter?
Gabe Richardson is taking advantage of Agim’s move inside. Right now he and Randy Ramsey are manning the two defensive end positions. Morris has said Richardson has worked his way into the starting rotation. Offensively, Maleek Williams is healthy now and trying to force his way into earning some playing time. He had nine carries for 79 yards and a TD in the most recent scrimmage. It’s a crowded running backs room and Chase Hayden, TJ Hammonds, and Devwah Whaley are all getting looks this spring, but he could be a factor come fall.
Any Early Enrollees Making Noise?
Right now Mike Woods is doing that. He had two catches in the scrimmage with one going for a TD. He’s not in the same group as Jared Cornelius, Jonathan Nance, Deon Stewart, and Pettway, but he should get some time during the year. Bumper Pool is also getting time but is dealing with a slight injury and was in a non contact jersey in the last scrimmage.
