SEC Baseball Monday Recap: No Rest

Conference play has been a test for everyone.

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Florida vs LSU Bruce Thorson-USA TODAY Sports

Conference play in the SEC is exactly what everyone expected it would be. There is very little separation and every team is in for a fight every weekend. Right now the conference is being led by Georgia (yes really) and Vanderbilt, but a handful of teams are right on their heels.

Florida Wins Series vs. Arkansas

After each team got a decisive win on Friday and Saturday, it came down to a rubber match on Sunday the the Gators won 5-4. The game winner was this Nelson Maldonado homerun.

The two teams proved they are going to be heavyweights in the conference but Florida got the decisive plays on Sunday. Maldonado’s home run came on an 0-2 count with two gone in the 7th, while the Hogs left 12 men on base in the series finale.

Vandy Wins Series vs. LSU

Weather kept Sunday’s game to just seven innings, but Vanderbilt got a gem from Mason Hickman. His line of 7 IP, 2 H, 9 Ks shut down LSU and puts the Commodores in a tie for first place in the conference. The Tigers bats were held in check all weekend, only getting eight total runs.

Kentucky Wins Series vs. Auburn

A good and much needed turnaround for the Wildcats, as they split their Sunday doubleheader to get a series win over Auburn. Kentucky got a wild pitch walk off on Friday, and hit their way to 13-3 win in the seven inning finale. Kentucky avoids falling too far behind in the SEC East while Auburn wastes another big outing from Casey Mize.

Tennessee Sweeps Alabama

What a signature weekend for former Razorback assistant Tony Vitello. The Vols get their first SEC sweep since 2015 over Alabama and sit at 4-2 in the SEC. Another series that had to have a Sunday doubleheader, Tennessee held Alabama to just five runs in the series.

Ole Miss Wins Series at Texas A&M

The only road team to win a series this weekend, and the Rebels did it in dramatic fashion. All three games were decided by just one run. With the tying run on second base, Ole Miss’ Parker Caracci shut the door on the Aggies.

Georgia Sweeps South Carolina

Um what? Yeah Georgia swept South Carolina and looked very decisive while doing it, outscoring the Gamecocks 22-8 over the weekend. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 in SEC play while South Carolina has dropped to 1-5. Their upcoming series at home against Tennessee might be the conference’s first must win situation of the year.

Missouri Wins Series vs. Miss State

Nothing like a Sunday walk off to win a series right? That’s what the Tigers got to avoid an ugly series loss to the Bulldogs.

Mizzou took advantage of Miss State’s six errors over the weekend to squeak out the series win.
