A new wrinkle for NFL rosters this year is just one cut to the 53-man rosters. This saturday, we’ll know who all made the squad and who will be cut. There are a bunch of former Hogs on teams across the country. Some will be cut, some will make the team. So time to take some wild educated guesses as to which pro Hogs you’ll see on Sundays. Right now Arkansas has 34 players on rosters, there definitely wont be 34 in a week but it will still be a pretty decent number.
Baltimore Ravens - Ryan Mallett
Oh god why did I decide to go in alphabetical order? Mallett has not had a good preseason. He’s been in the headlines for the wrong reasons and his play hasn’t been much better. Just a 56% completion rate and 1 TD with 2 INT’s isn’t getting it done. The Ravens inability to look elsewhere keeps him on the roster though.
Prediction: IN
Buffalo Bills - Cam Jefferson, Jonathan Williams
J-Will is pretty safely in behind LeSean McCoy at running back. He’s done well in practice and gotten a decent amount of carries in preseason play. It can be hard to gauge o-line cuts if you’re not a die hard, but early returns don’t look good for Jefferson.
Prediction: Jefferson - OUT, Williams - IN
Cincinnati Bengals - Chris Smith
Smith has had a good preseason with multiple TFL’s, which he needed to play himself onto the roster
Prediction: IN
Dallas Cowboys - Sam Irwin-Hill, Darren McFadden, Dan Skipper
After being an undrafted pickup, Skipper always seemed like a long shot and likely hasn’t broken through a deep o-line. McFadden getting in is pretty straight forward, especially with Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension. Irwin-Hill has tried some field goals and some punts, but NFL kickers are hard to displace.
Prediction: Irwin-Hill - OUT, McFadden - IN, Skipper OUT
Denver Broncos - AJ Derby
Derby hasn’t done a ton to stand out in preseason but it doesn’t matter. He’s going to be in.
Prediction: Derby - IN
Detroit Lions - Jeremiah Ledbetter, Travis Swanson
Swanson has been a starter and lock for Detroit for a while. Ledbetter has gotten a good amount of snaps in preseason and should be in as well.
Prediction: Ledbetter - IN, Swanson - IN
Green Bay Packers - Brett Goode
LONG SNAPPER ANALYSIS AHEAD.
Goode has been with Green Bay forever. He’s in.
Prediction: IN
Jacksonville Jaguars - Brandon Allen
The quarterback situation has gotten iffy in Jacksonville and Allen has had a very good preseason. Allen’s completion is just under 60% and he’s got 2 TD’s and shown a little athleticism on the run. Not only will he make the team, he might get some playing time.
Prediction: IN
Los Angeles Chargers - Toby Baker, Hunter Henry, Darius Philon
Hunter Henry had a breakout rookie year and is likely the only one of the three to make the final roster.
Prediction: Baker - OUT, Henry - IN, Philon - OUT
Miami Dolphins - Drew Morgan
Drew Morgan impressed in training camp, and is in competition with Damore’a Stringfellow for the last roster spot. Morgan has had one catch for 5 yards. Stringfellow has four catches four 130 yards. Ouch.
Prediction: Morgan - Practice Squad
Minnesota Vikings - Jarius Wright
Oh he’s easily in.
Prediction: IN
New England Patriots - Brooks Ellis, Trey Flowers, Cody Hollister, Deatrich Wise
Hollister hasn’t done much to prove his use to the Super Bowl Champs. Neither has Brooks Ellis. But Wise is making the cut and has been under the wing of team leader Trey Flowers, who easily makes it.
Prediction: Ellis - OUT, Flowers - IN, Hollister - OUT, Wise - IN
New Orleans Saints - Mitchell Loewen
Loewen has showed out in preseason, especially getting 1.5 sacks in the opener. Loewen has played himself in with those kind of performances.
Prediction: IN
New York Giants - Robert Thomas
Thomas is quietly in with the Giants d-line as a reserve.
Prediction: IN
New York Jets - Chris Gragg
Gragg was a surprise pickup by the Jets but there just isn’t enough room for him after this week.
Prediction: OUT
Oakland Raiders - Keon Hatcher, Denver Kirkland
Razorbacks go 0-for-2 out by the bay, unfortunately.
Prediction: Hatcher - OUT, Kirkland - OUT
Philadelphia Eagles - Jason Peters
Peters has been with the Eagles for roughly 55 years. No reason to see that changing now.
Prediction: IN
Pittsburgh Steelers - Knile Davis, Cobi Hamilton
Hamilton has made some outstanding catches in preseason but the Steelers are deep at WR. Davis was brought in to see what he could do as a returner and hasn’t made a big move.
Prediction: Davis - OUT, Hamilton OUT
Seattle Seahawks - Alex Collins
Collins has been right on the fence recently but Pete Carroll has had good things to say about the running back. We’re homers here so we’ll go with in.
Prediction: IN
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Zach Hocker
Hocker was brought in after Tampa cut Roberto Aguayo (after trading up to draft him in the second round which is INCREDIBLE comedy). However he still won’t make the cut.
Prediction: OUT
Washington - Martrell Spaight, Jeremy Sprinkle
Spaight was Washington’s defensive player of the game in their most recent preseason game. Sprinkle is behind some talent but should still have a spot.
Prediction: Spaight - IN, Sprinkle - IN
Overall that’s 19 former Razorbacks making final NFL rosters. For a program who has had some real ups and downs recently, it’s something to be proud of.
