Bret Bielema Making Noise at AFCA Convention

New, 18 comments

Coach B was in Louisville today speaking at the American Football Coaches Association convention, and some of his comments have spread around the Internet as Bielema comments have a way of doing.

Who's ready for another offseason of Bielema saying things that go viral?! The 2015 edition apparently kicked off today.

This one's getting the most traction:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>Bielema: &quot;I love when coaches have 5 rules in their locker room and No. 1 is No Guns. &#39;Well, no s---!&#39;&quot;</p>&mdash; Zach Barnett (@zach_barnett) <a href="https://twitter.com/zach_barnett/status/554726492408918016">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>

A lot of people are saying that's a shot at Charlie Strong and his "5 Core Values" (as best illustrated by 5 Core Values guy from the Texas Bowl). They're probably not wrong.

But really, this was Bielema's money line about Texas that no one's talking about, and this was not veiled. It's pretty direct:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>Ark coaches wanted to punch in another TD at end of Texas win. &quot;I said no, let&#39;s take a knee 3 times bc hey can&#39;t do a damn thing about it.&quot;</p>&mdash; Zach Barnett (@zach_barnett) <a href="https://twitter.com/zach_barnett/status/554730255026769922">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>

To be fair, No Guns is not the first value on Strong's list. It goes as so:

  1. Honesty
  2. Treat women with respect
  3. No drugs
  4. No stealing
  5. No weapons

This is compared to Bielema's "The Arkansas Edge" which is as follows:

  1. Mental and Physical Toughness
  2. Play Fast and Through the Whistle
  3. Play Clean
  4. Win Critical Areas
  5. We Earn Everything

As you can see, Bielema likes to focus his tenants on winning football games as opposed to, say, basic human decency and staying out of jail.

I'm sure Bielema addresses those complicated legal matters in other ways.

Here are some other highlights from his talk:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>Bielema talking about the concept of time, quotes a movie; FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. Only Bielema</p>&mdash; Doug Samuels (@CoachSamz) <a href="https://twitter.com/CoachSamz/status/554723753041862656">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>

Forgetting Sarah Marshall really is a quintessential Bielema movie if you think about it. Guy finds the love of his life while on vacation. Guy is on vacation. Guy has a good time on vacation. Good food, good drinks, wacky misadventures. Elements of musical comedy. I can see him watching that movie several times.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Bielema: time is the exact same for everyone <a href="http://t.co/Tbx7JXUUUi">pic.twitter.com/Tbx7JXUUUi</a></p>&mdash; Doug Samuels (@CoachSamz) <a href="https://twitter.com/CoachSamz/status/554724000606453761">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

No confirmation as to whether Bielema recited the "time is a flat circle" speech. Although you could argue that's taking another shot at Texas by not quoting McConaughey when given an easy opportunity. Probably law in Austin or something.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Bielema, filling in for Malzahn at the AFCA, jokes that coaches hoping to learn some no huddle &quot;aren&#39;t going to learn a whole hell of a lot&quot;</p>&mdash; Doug Samuels (@CoachSamz) <a href="https://twitter.com/CoachSamz/status/554719239563935744">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>He didn&#39;t say it explicitly, but Bielema didn&#39;t paint a very rosy picture of the culture Bobby Petrino/John L Smith left behind.</p>&mdash; Zach Barnett (@zach_barnett) <a href="https://twitter.com/zach_barnett/status/554731220777836544">January 12, 2015</a></blockquote>
