Report: Chris Ash Hired At Ohio State To Be Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel broke the news Tuesday morning.

Days after filling Charlie Partridge's spot on his staff, Bret Bielema is back to searching for a coach complete the Razorbacks' coaching roster.

Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel is reporting defensive coordinator Chris Ash is heading to Ohio State to take a similar position for the Buckeyes.

Ash had been Bielema's defensive coordinator at Wisconsin and led an Arkansas defense that put up some really dismal stats, but it's widely agreed that it was more a talent issue than anything else.

There are a few interesting angles to this move. Bielema made it well known when he was hired that part of his problem at Wisconsin was losing assistants to similar positions at other schools, and Bielema's feelings toward Ohio State are well-known, so it will be interesting to see Ash's motives for taking the same job in Columbus (although blind speculation is fun and easy!) .

Regardless, Bielema must now fill his defensive coordinator spot. There will be plenty of speculation about promoting linebackers coach Randy Shannon to the position, as he's been rumored to be a candidate for several positions this offseason. Bielema may be just as likely to hire someone from the outside. Regardless, he'll have to find someone new to fill out the staff.
