Arkansas Football Countdown: 22 Days - Nate Holmes and D.J. Dean

The 22 jersey is reserved for speed in 2013.

Nelson Chenault-US PRESSWIRE

We'll see it most frequently on sophomore running back Nate Holmes. Listed at 6'1" and 180 lbs, Holmes isn't as big as some of his peers in the running back corps, but he can move as quickly as any of them, if not moreso. He even helped the team as both a kickoff and punt returner last season, showing some nice moves on a punt return in last season's opener against Jacksonville State (although it was called back). His punt return average of 6.36 yards ranked 10th in the SEC.

Holmes will be sharing the number this year with freshman D.J. Dean (we know all the numbers of this year's freshman, that's how close we are to kickoff. Hurray!) Here's what we wrote about Dean when he signed with Arkansas in February.

D.J. Dean has speed and plenty of it. With a 4.5 40 time and over 1,000 yards rushing you know he's got some speed and moves to go with it. In the SEC it's all about speed and having a cornerback that can keep up with any wideout in the league is a must have for any defense. With 20 touchdowns on the ground, it wouldn't hurt to see him taking one back the other way every once in a while.

Editors Note: We got a little mixed up this week and published this a day early, and skipped over some players in the process. Apologies to Daunte Carr #24s Daunte Carr and Kody Walker.  Walker shined in the spring game and is competing for carries this fall after breaking his leg last year, a great comeback story.  Carr was listed as the starting middle linebacker after spring practice and should see plenty of time on the field this fall.

#23 is Scotty Thurman, a redshirt freshman at wide receiver. Yes, they're related. He starred at Fayetteville High School before joining the Razorbacks.
