82 days: Mekale McKay

It's coming

Mekale McKay, So.

6-6, 195

Though Mekale McKay finished his freshman season as Arkansas' second-leading receiver, he'll begin his sophomore year second on the depth chart. Having to prove himself is nothing new for McKay, though.

His signing was overlooked by many after he waited a month after National Signing Day to choose the Hogs over offers from Tennessee, Louisville, Cincinnati and more. But the three-star prospect who was considered one of the Bluegrass State's best in the Class of 2012 didn't take long to make his presence know once he arrived in Fayetteville.

McKay played in all 12 games last fall and started 10, finishing with 21 receptions, 317 yards and two touchdowns. His ability as a possession receiver was apparent, and he began showing greater comfort with the ball in his hands after the catch as the year wore on.

With the coaching regime change came a fresh start across the roster, and when spring drills ended, a trio of seniors (Demetrius Wilson, Javontee Herndon and Julian Horton) were listed as the starters, with McKay and fellow sophomores D'Arthur Cowan and Keon Hatcher listed as second teamers.

And even though Arkansas is expected to use few three- and four-wide receiver sets under the new coaching staff, opportunities abound in the receiver corps. Cobi Hamilton and his 90 receptions are gone to the NFL. At this point, McKay looks as like as any of the others to become the Hogs' next go-to WR.
