Santa Qualls – Whoever came up with "Santa Qualls," I applaud you. Anyway, Qualls made yet another appearance on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays over the weekend (which I haven't seen, and the referee is blocking the camera shot on RazorVision) dunking over a poor South Alabama defender who I'm guessing was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Question: Is Q the answer? Is he what Arkansas needed to rise back to national respectability? He's certainly not standing in the way. As a Hogville poster put it: Qualls makes me yell at the tv, find a 7 ft goal and posterize one of the grandkids.
Anton Beard/NLR – North Little Rock, undoubtedly one of the top high school basketball team in the state, if not the best, traveled to Milwaukee over the weekend, playing in the Winter Snow Jam and faced some tough competition from around the country. NLR left the Winter Snow Jam with two wins, defeating teams from California and Minnesota. Hog signee Anton Beard showed out in an OT win in the first game, and Kevaughn Allen poured in 22 points in the second game. Here are the day 1 and day 2 highlights.
Hog Hoops A-Z – A co-worker of mine at the Arkansas Traveler is in the midst of an A-Z series on Arkansas basketball leading up to the opening of conference play in January. He's at the letter "I" now, and will continue to crank out an article a day until the showdown with Texas A&M (which is going to be huge for the team). You can check out the entire series up to this point here.
Trio of Hogs in HoF – Three former Razorbacks were inducted into the 2014 Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, including football standouts David Bazzel and Dennis Winston. Former Arkansas women's basketball coach Gary Blair was also inducted. Professional golfer from Henderson State University (here's a shoutout to Arkadelphia) Ken Duke was also inducted. You can get more info on the inductees and read the full list here.
